Day 2 without nicotine

Withdrawal is building today. That is expected, not a sign you are failing.

What's happening

Day 2 is often harder than day 1. The NHS says withdrawal symptoms are usually strongest in the first week, especially the first 3 days. Cleveland Clinic and a 2015 scientific review both describe symptoms peaking around the second or third day.

Irritability is one of the most common symptoms. The CDC says it is very common to feel grouchy or upset when you quit, and that this is your body getting used to being without nicotine.

Each single craving is short. The NHS says cravings last up to 15 minutes, and the American Lung Association says urges pass in three to five minutes whether you use or not.

What helps today

  • When a craving starts, look at the clock. Aim to get through the next 15 minutes, not the whole day.
  • Drink plenty of water through the day. Smokefree.gov says it can ease hunger and tiredness and may help with cravings.
  • Warn people close to you that you may be short-tempered for a few days.
  • Keep your mouth busy with sugar-free gum, carrots or celery.
