Day 28 without nicotine

Four weeks. The NHS treats day 28 as a key milestone.

What's happening

The NHS says that if you stay smoke-free for 28 days, you are 5 times more likely to quit for good. That figure is about quitting smoking, but four weeks is a big step whatever you used.

Withdrawal usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks on average, so for many people the physical part is mostly behind them. The NHS also says some people feel symptoms for longer.

From here on, staying quit is mostly about triggers, habits and not testing yourself.

What helps today

  • Celebrate four weeks in a way that means something to you.
  • Look at your savings so far.
  • Keep avoiding high-risk situations a while longer, especially drinking around people who vape or smoke.
  • Share the milestone with someone who has supported you.
